Anna tell us.....
What programs and projects do you volunteer with at Best Friends LA?
I volunteer as a Cat Liaison at NKLA.
Why do you choose to volunteer with Best Friends LA?
I admire the effort to turn Los Angeles into a no-kill city, and want to help this very important mission succeed. I just hope that cities big and small across the country will soon adopt similar strategies and goals.
How long have you been a Best Friends LA volunteer?
It hasn't been very long -- I started in March, but love it! I look forward to my shift every week, eager to meet our new cats and help enrich their time at NKLA. Of course, the best part is helping them find the perfect forever home with a loving family!
What type of fun stuff do you do when you're not volunteering?
I'm an editor/journalist, currently working for a popular magazine most people have probably seen while waiting in line at their grocery stores. (Best Friends' celebrity supporters have appeared in our pages numerous times!) In my free time, I spoil my cats rotten, and I love to cook.
Do you have a favorite story to share about an experience volunteering with Best Friends LA?
Getting a shy, scared cat to relax and trust me is always a favorite moment! But there was one day recently when a little boy and his dad came looking to adopt a cat, and the little guy was so excited! He had so many questions for me about finding the right cat for him and caring for it. Seeing his enthusiasm and passion for kitties at such a young age gave me a lot of hope for the future. I probably spent about 45 minutes with them answering questions and helping them consider which one might be a good match. In the end, he picked out an adorable little black kitten named Zachary. He could not have been more excited!
Do you have any pets?
I have two cats, a 13-year-old tortie named Monkey, and a 9-year-old Himalayan named Mabel. Monkey came from the Seattle Animal Shelter, and Mabel from PAWS, the shelter I volunteered at for 7 years when I lived in Washington. These girls have been through a lot with me, including two cross-country moves! Monk definitely has major tortitude. She's the boss, and boy, will she let you know it! She makes a fabulous guard cat (though having guests over is rather difficult as everyone is terrified of her). Mabel is the sweetest, most petite little scaredy cat. She's terrified of Monkey, but she'll risk her sister's wrath to gobble up both plates of food!
What others are saying about Anna:

When we're at our rush times with many visitors at the center, Anna has been there consistently helping our cats plus also staff and clients. Her commitment to helping others has not gone unnoticed and we so appreciate her volunteering regularly - the cats and kittens do too! - Erika, Volunteer Coordinator
